What period do we call Dubrovnik’s golden age? Who did live in the city then? What did the people eat? What did the people do to have fun? If you choose this tour, you will find out.

Dubrovnik’s golden age was the 15th and 16th centuries. Those centuries were not easy at all. The Turks were on one side of Dubrovnik, very close. Venice threatened them on the other side. Nevertheless, the Dubrovnik Republic managed to navigate those seas thanks to its diplomacy. Dubrovnik’s diplomats were making all the possible efforts to avoid wars, and they did it very well. That’s why, while the others were fighting in the wars, all the trade was passing through Dubrovnik’s neutral zone. The Republic became very rich in that period and, therefore, we call it “the golden age of Dubrovnik”. However, this tour focuses more on everyday life in Renaissance Dubrovnik. We will talk about how the ordinary people lived, the rich and the poor, the nobility and the servants. This is the journey through the daily life of the golden age of Dubrovnik.

In 1667 a terrible earthquake struck Dubrovnik. That natural disaster made a significant part of the Renaissance Dubrovnik architecture disappear. Nevertheless, some things remained. We will discover them together on this thematic tour.

Itinerary through Dubrovnik’s golden age

The beginning of this tour is at Pile square with an introduction to the golden age of Dubrovnik. We cross the drawbridge and stroll down to the main street. First, we stop next to the Big Onofrio’s fountain at the beginning of the main street. Then we continue through the street Od puča, one of the parallel streets to the main one. We pass through several side streets and we stop in a few places of interest.  When we reach the main street again, we cross it. We need to climb a few steps to arrive at Prijeko – another parallel street. The way leads us down to Luža, the main square, and from there, we will continue to the old port.

After a stop in the old harbor, we continue through the quarter called Karmen where the noble families lived in the past. By walking through several side streets, we reach the building called “Rupe”. It was the city’s granary in the past. In the end, we walk down the steps, and we conclude our visit in front of the House of Marin Držić, close to the main street.

Few things you should keep in mind about this tour:

  • This is a thematic tour. Although we pass through some places like in the basic walking tour, our interest is specific, and the explanations cover other topics.
  • This tour does not include entrance to any museum. Everything is explained in the open air.
  • We pass through some “less touristy” parts.
