Old city of Dubrovnik – private guided tour

First time in Dubrovnik and you want to learn about the city’s history and monuments? Choose this tour!

The basic guided tour of Dubrovnik is a walking tour through its old city. Accompanied by your local guide, you walk through the enchanting streets and squares. Let’s suppose that I’m your Dubrovnik guide. During the walk, we stop at interesting places for explanations. There is a lot of history in Dubrovnik, that is true. However, this city is still very much alive. You can still see the old ladies going to the local farmers’ market to buy vegetables. In the narrow streets, neighbors talking to each other from their windows. Don’t be surprised if you see someone going out to the street in their slippers. They see the city as their living room.

For 450 years, Dubrovnik was the center of a small city-state that lived off trade and navigation. Its best period was the 15th and 16th centuries. That small republic preserved its neutrality and freedom thanks to its diplomacy. The Turks were on one side, Venice on the other. Dubrovnik needed to survive in the middle without using arms.

Itinerary of the tour

The guided tour starts at Pile square. We enter the city through the western gate, and we continue down to the main street. First, we stop close to the Big Onofrio’s fountain and the Franciscan monastery. Inside the monastery, there is one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe. Then, we continue walking along Stradun, the main street, and after a while, we turn left to Prijeko, the street parallel to the main one.

Upon reaching its end, we continue down to Luža, the main square where we find Sponza palace. It is one of the most representative Dubrovnik palaces and its principal function was the customs. The clock tower is next to it. The Church of Saint Blaise occupies the central position of the main square. For over a thousand years, Saint Blaise has been the city’s patron saint.

The walk continues further towards the Rector’s Palace (the old seat of the government) and the Cathedral. After passing through the old port, we come back to the main square where we finish the tour.
